Thursday, May 25, 1967 remains the greatest day in Celtic Football Club's long and illustrious history as Jock Stein's side defeated Inter Milan 2-1 at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon to win the European Cup. It was remarkable triumph as the team became the first from Britain to lift the trophy. Indeed, prior to 1967 it had been the preserve of the Latin triumvirate of Spain, Portugal and Italy.

What made the success all the more extraordinary was that it was achieved by a team which, just two years previously, had finished eighth in the Scottish league. Jock Stein's arrival as manager in March 1965 changed everything, and two years later Celtic were the Kings of Europe. Not only that, but they did so with a team all born within a thirty-mile radius of Celtic Park. No club had done anything similar before then, and no club has subsequesntly matched that.

Fifty years on from that momentous day when the legend of the Lisbon Lions was created, Celtic supporters of all generations, wherever they are in the world, still remember that success with immense pride. It was not just a victory for Celtic. It was a victory for an attacking brand of football that reinvigorated the European game following the years of defensive success pioneered by Inter Milan, which was stifling the game.

Jock Stein's words encapsulated Celtic's triumph, not only in its scale but in its beauty, and supporters celebrated the victory, while the football world rejoiced too as the famous green and white Hoops of Celtic won it by 'playing football. Pure beautiful inventive football'.
